Had Daniel Barden survived the massacre at his elementary school, the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that claimed the lives of 26 innocent people, he would have enjoyed this weekend, celebrating his thirteenth birthday with his family. Daniel was loved by everyone who knew him, and he touched their lives with his warmth, kindness, generosity, and his imaginative play. Daniel was outside some time before sunrise on Friday, December 14, 2012, and he admired the Christmas lights on a Christmas tree and said in his cute little boy voice, “Isn’t it beautiful?” His father, Mark Barden, agreed it was beautiful and took a picture of it. Then, Daniel practiced playing “Jingle Bells” on the piano at home. When the bus came, Daniel got on the bus. Little did Mark know, this would be the final time he would see his beautiful boy alive. The day at Sandy Hook Elementary School started out like any other school day, but shortly after 9:30 a.m. EST, a gunman, later identified as Adam Lanza, walked into Daniel’s first grade classroom and fatally shot him, along with many other first grade students. Lanza also killed six staff members at the school before taking his own life. A six-year-old girl stayed alive through the massacre by playing dead. Daniel is survived by his brother James, and his sister Natalie. Daniel had dreams of becoming a firefighter when he grows up, but now that unfortunately won’t happen.
